A LITTLE LOOK INTO MY WORLD.
When I'm not doing what I love at work, you’ll probably find me up a mountain with my dogs, galloping along a beach on my horse or getting lost in The Lake District. Nature is my favourite girlboss and stomping in all weathers is one of my favourite way to spend a day off*.

Why DESIGNjACK?
The BBC series Gentleman Jack, set in the 1830s, tells the extraordinary true story of Anne Lister, a woman from Halifax who lived centuries ahead of her time. Fearlessly independent and relentlessly ambitious, Anne defied every expectation placed upon women of her era. She managed coal mines, negotiated business deals, travelled extensively, and took charge of her family's estate with remarkable confidence and determination.
THE MYSTERY OF ANNE’S CODED DIARIES
What makes Gentleman Jack even more compelling is that much of its dialogue and many of its events are drawn directly from Anne Lister's own diaries. Hidden within the walls of Shibden Hall from the early 1800s until their discovery in 1934, they preserved the authentic voice of an exceptional woman. Anne wrote around four million words, with substantial portions encoded in an ingenious cryptic script of her own invention, combining Greek letters, algebraic symbols, and other characters. Within those coded pages, she recorded her love affairs, deepest emotions, business dealings, travels, and ambitions with astonishing honesty.
THE CODE IS CRACKED
For decades, the code remained a mystery. It was eventually deciphered by John Lister, a descendant of the Lister family and resident of Shibden Hall, together with his friend Arthur Burrell, a local schoolteacher and antiquarian. Their breakthrough came after discovering a scrap of paper in Anne's handwriting bearing the words, "In God is my hope." By identifying the symbols used for the word "hope," they were able to establish the key to the cipher and unlock the rest of her remarkable journals.
What emerged was one of the most significant personal records of the nineteenth century. The diaries revealed the depth of Anne Lister's lifelong relationship with fellow landowner Ann Walker. Their commitment ceremony is regarded by many historians as one of the earliest same-sex unions in Britain. Anne never concealed her masculine style of dress, her independence, or her love for women, earning her the nickname "Gentleman Jack." Today, she is celebrated as one of history's most inspiring LGBTQ+ trailblazers.
SHOW SOME COURAGE
At its heart, Gentleman Jack is a story about the courage to live authentically. Anne Lister refused to allow society to dictate who she should be. Her resilience, confidence, and unwavering sense of self continue to inspire people nearly two centuries later, reminding us that true fulfilment comes not from fitting in, but from embracing who we are.
One of the most powerful lines from her diaries captures that spirit perfectly:
"Show some courage."
Role models do not always belong to our own generation. Sometimes the greatest inspiration comes from those who walked the world long before us. Anne Lister's story reminds us that courage, authenticity, and determination are timeless qualities—and that one person's refusal to compromise their identity can continue to inspire countless others hundreds of years later.
